If you plan on teaching at a 4-year college or university, you probably need to earn a doctoral degree in Romanian language and literature. You need to communicate with students and relate to their issues. Another potential career path is interpreter or translator. As an interpreter you would be convert spoken Romanian to another language, while as a translator you would work specifically with written Romanian documents and convert them into another language, like English. While this profession does not require specific certifications or degree programs, you need to be fluent in at least one language in addition to Romanian. Most translation agencies hire those who already have 3-5 years of work experience.

Employment of interpreters and translators is projected to increase by 46% from 2012-2022, with the best prospects expected in urban areas such as Washington, D.C. and New York. The median annual wage for postsecondary foreign language and literature instructors was $58,670 in 2012, per the BLS; that same year, interpreters and translators earned a median annual wage of $45,430.

How Can I Work in Romanian Literature and Language?

Education

At the bachelor's degree level, students can major in Central and Eastern European languages and cultures. Classes generally focus on multiple languages, cultures and literatures from this geographic area, with an emphasis on Romanian language and literature. You may have the option to study other subjects such as business or politics in conjunction with your Romanian language studies. Language courses usually include composition, conversation and advanced Romanian instruction.
