Is Teaching Sales and Marketing for Me?

Job Description

Sales and marketing teachers may work at high schools, colleges or universities. High school business teachers, also called career and technical education (CTE) teachers, instruct students on how to run a business. Students can learn how to use business computer systems and make financial decisions. You may also assist your students in starting a business operation at the school or help them find an internship at a local business.

Postsecondary instructors teach courses related to their area of expertise. If you specialize in sales or marketing, you might teach courses in consumer behavior, marketing research and advertising. You assist graduate students with their research and work with each student individually if they are having trouble grasping concepts. You generally teach at the campus of the college you work for, but due to the growing popularity of online courses, you can sometimes work from a remote location.

Employment Information

CTE teachers are expected to see a 9% increase in employment overall from 2012-2022; the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) specified that those teaching high school can expect 5% job growth, and those teaching at the postsecondary vocational level can expect 12% job growth ( Postsecondary business teachers are expected to see a 15% increase in job opportunities during that same decade, per the BLS. Much of the job growth in postsecondary education was projected to come from community colleges. Job growth for CTE instructors may be limited due to schools focusing on general subjects, rather than training students for specific careers, the BLS reported.

The BLS reports that in 2012, CTE teachers overall earned median pay of $51,910. More specific salary data is available for 2013: high school CTE teachers earned $55,120 as a median in that year, and postsecondary business teachers earned $75,120 (

How Can I Teach Sales and Marketing?

If you wish to teach at the secondary level, you need to obtain at least a bachelor's degree. You can usually major in the specific area you want to teach and complete a teaching preparation program at the same time. If you already have a bachelor's degree, you can complete a set of training courses in order to get your teaching license. All CTE instructors need to be licensed in the state where they will teach. Some states may require you obtain a master's degree shortly after you start teaching.

You need to complete graduate school to work at a college or a university. Most full-time and tenured positions at universities are only filled with applicants who have a doctoral degree in a subject related to what they plan to teach. You may be able to find some full-time jobs at 2-year colleges with only a master's degree.

Regardless of which level you want to teach, a bachelor's degree in business can get you started. Courses for a 4-year business program in marketing include business finance, personal selling and promotional management. Some schools may offer a business education undergraduate program that gives you a degree and a teaching certificate in the state where you are attending school. A master's degree in business and marketing education can be a good choice after you obtain a bachelor's degree or if you are already working in the business industry and you want to become a teacher. Ph.D. programs in business usually allow you to choose a specific area of interest to study. Students take advanced courses, work on original research and complete a dissertation in a business marketing doctoral program.
