Most aircraft mechanics and service technicians earn their degree from one of the many schools certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Most of these schools award associate degrees in Airframe and Powerplant Technology, but bachelor degree programs are available as well. It takes the average student two years to earn an associate degree and four years to earn a bachelor's degree.

Required Courses

Certified mechanic schools are required by law to offer students a minimum of 1,900 class hours in an FAA approved program. Many of these hours will be spent taking courses in physics, mechanical drawing, computer science, aviation electronics, aircraft systems and aviation maintenance. Students will also learn how to use tools and equipment that are common on the job.

Careers in Airframe and Powerplant Technology

Most of the students who earn a degree in Airframe and Powerplant Technology go on to work as aircraft mechanics and service technicians. Some of these students specialize in aircraft maintenance and repair. Others focus on inspecting aviation systems and electronics.
