Computer Aided Drafting, sometimes known as Computer Aided Drafting and Design, is a drafting technique used to create blueprints and drawings for engineers, manufacturers and other construction professionals. Students who study Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) can work for manufacturing, architectural, engineering, and related services firms.

CAD Overview

Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) systems are used to create and store electronic blueprints and drawings. These electronic documents are used later on by engineers, architects and manufacturers to construct everything from buildings and bridges to aircraft, cars and electrical equipment.

The individuals who operate Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) systems are known as drafters or CAD operators. These professionals must have specialized training to create the detailed two- and three-dimensional drawings that show other people how to construct a finished product.

Computer Aided Drafting Careers

Many of the individuals who study Computer Aided Drafting choose to specialize in specific areas, such as architectural drafting, aeronautical drafting, civil drafting, electrical drafting or mechanical drafting. Aeronautical drafters draw the plans that are used to manufacture aircraft and related parts. Architectural drafters draw buildings and certain other structures.

Civil drafters focus on creating maps and other drawings for civil engineering projects, such as bridges or highways. Electrical and electronic drafters prepare wiring and layout diagrams for electrical equipment and circuit boards. And mechanical drafters create drawings used in the assembly and design of machinery and mechanical devices.
