Education and Training

You will need to complete a formal EMT training program before you can become an Ambulance Technician. Programs can be found at community colleges, technical schools, hospitals and other education facilities. In most cases, all that is needed is a high school diploma to be accepted into a program.

Programs begin training students at the EMT-Basic level. At this level, you will learn how to maintain and use emergency medical equipment. You will also learn how to assess patients, stop bleeding, stabilize fractures, administer CPR and perform other emergency procedures.

After passing an EMT-Basic level course, you can begin working as an Ambulance Technician. You can also pursue additional training at the intermediate and advanced level. Intermediate programs teach additional life-saving skills. Programs at the advanced level will prepare you to work as a paramedic.

Licensing and Certification

Certification is required to work as an Ambulance Technician. Some states administer their own certification exams. Others allow Ambulance Technicians to choose between a state exam and the certification exam given by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. All Ambulance Technicians are required to re-certify every two to four years.
