A Pharmacy Technician works directly with a licensed pharmacist to provide health care products, such as medication, to patients. PTs may work in retail, hospital or clinic pharmacy locations.

Job Description

Pharmacy Technicians work under the direct supervision of pharmacists to provide health care products, such as medication and other prescriptions, to patients. They prepare these medication and prescription orders according to a physician's instructions. Pharmacy Techs may also provide administrative services such as charting, shelve stocking and data entry. Most Pharmacy Technician positions can be obtained with an associate's degree.

Daily Duties

Pharmacy Techs work daily with patients, filling their health care and medication orders. They may physically prepare the medication, though most times, a licensed pharmacist is the only one who can explain to patients the proper use of such medication. Depending on the state of employment, Pharmacy Technicians may be able to hand out medication to patients. These professionals are responsible for the packaging and labeling of medications and may be required to use packaging machines or robotic organizational systems for help.

Work Setting

Pharmacy Technicians may work for retail pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, pharmaceutical wholesalers or Internet pharmacies. Some may even hold positions for the federal government. Much of the workday is spent on the feet with moderate lifting required to retrieve supplies or arrange pharmaceutical deliveries. PTs work in clean, organized and sanitized environments. They work closely with pharmacists and patients and are often standing for much of the day. Hours may include evenings or weekends, particularly for those who may work at pharmacies that are open 24 hours a day.
