Free video lectures are a good way to access high-quality education from your own home. A number of top colleges and universities, such as Princeton, MIT, UC Berkeley and Yale, currently offer free video lectures to self-learners around the world.

Princeton University

Princeton University was ranked as the top national university in the United States in 2016 by U.S. News and World Report. This top university provides access to many of its public lecture series and other special program lectures via the Media Central website. Lecture topics include computer science, history, public policy and many others.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

In 2016, MIT was ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the top U.S. school for undergraduate engineering (where the highest engineering degree offered is at the doctorate level). Many audio and video course lectures are offered via the university's OpenCourseWare (OCW) site. Courses are broken down into departments, and the lectures can be found in a wide variety of subjects, including nuclear science and engineering, engineering systems, economics, philosophy, aeronautics, physics, media arts and writing.

Yale University

Yale University offers 25 full classes' worth of high-definition video lectures, in over 20 areas of study, through the Open Yale Courses (OYC) program. You can access these lectures from Yale's YouTube site, or you can view them from the actual course website. OYC course subjects include English, philosophy, astronomy, history, political science and religious studies, to name a few.

University of California at Berkeley

UC Berkeley is the top public university in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report in 2016. Through the webcast.berkeley site, you can access selected video lectures from Fall 2005 to Spring 2015. These videos are also available on UC Berkeley's YouTube channel, and more current videos may be available on EdX. Video lectures are available from over 30 of the university's departments and cover subjects like American studies, law, philosophy, astronomy, physics and statistics.

Columbia University

Columbia University in the City of New York was ranked 4th among national universities in 2016 by U.S. News and World Report. This school offers a range of course-wide lectures and free OCW video courses. The course-wide video lectures date back to 1999 and are typically based on books, people or theories. Additionally, the Earth Institute at Columbia provides access to many video lectures covering topics such as water, sustainable development and climate. Videos lectures from some Earth Institute courses are also available.

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT)

NJIT's OCW program includes audio and video lectures from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Newark College of Engineering, and the School of Management. To access the videos, you'll need to download the mp3 files and view them using video player software.
