12-Month Online DNP Program Info

If you are currently a nurse and interested in pursuing the highest level of nursing education available, a Doctor of Nursing Practice program is a great option. In order to complete the program in only a year, online DNP students are expected to take on a full-time course load, with courses similar to the ones highlighted below.

Healthcare Policy

While it may be assumed you have discussed policy in earlier degrees, these courses may tend to focus on the most foundational, the newest, or the most complicated of policies when it comes to health care. Sometimes these classes may allow you to walk through scenarios where policy does not exist or is lacking and give you the tools needed to navigate through those scenarios. These courses also hope to enable you to become an informed advocate and advisor to future health care policies.

Ethics in Healthcare

Often tied closely with policy, these classes may walk you through common ethical dilemmas that may come up during your career, to give you the tools needed to be able to find your way through these difficult situations. A course like this may talk about issues in the medical community that are rather divisive and the ethics on both sides. You may also have the opportunity to learn about how to create ethical policies.

Finances / Economics and Health Care

Courses focused on finances or economics and health care can take two directions: from the side of the patient, and from the side of the hospital. The hope is that these courses will allow for nurses to acquire skills to bring forth and understand the financial impact a change can make in the hospital. There can also be a consideration toward the socio-economic differences that cause disparities in health care.

Quality Improvement in Healthcare

Here you may learn about the foundational principles of quality when it comes to the health care setting. A course like this may hope to help you initiate improvements to areas you feel are lacking in your work environment. This course can be tied in very closely with patient and worker safety, including what initiatives should be in place already, and where gaps may still exist. You may be expected to formulate goals and then evaluate how effective strategies are to meet those goals.

Evidence-Based Practice

These types of courses help you understand the benefits of using evidence in your research, and may be helpful for your final project. However, rather than work on your own project you may be expected to simply explore the frameworks which are available to you, and evaluate them. You may explore scholarly work and try to find which methods were used, how they were successful, what they may have missed, and how they could have prevented that gap. You may also be asked how findings from scholarly literature can be integrated into the health care system, and how feasible the ideas are.

Information Technology in Health Care

An information technology course related to health care, or informatics, is focused on the technology that benefits medical administration, ranging from research to managing data like patient health care records. In this course, students may delve deeply into the ethics, politics, and global issues related to using information technology in health care.

Common Admission Requirements

To be considered for entry into an online 12-month DNP program you often will need to provide proof of graduation from an accredited MSN program, however some schools may also consider you if you have proof of significant experience. You may be expected to have attained at least a 3.0 GPA, this may include your MSN, BSN, and possibly any other post-secondary coursework you pursued. You may also be asked to provide at least 2 letters of recommendation, and a current version of your resume. To enter into these programs, you are typically expected to have a current registered nurse (RN) license and at least two years of experience working as a nurse.

There may also be a requirement for you to write an essay about why you want to pursue your DNP and what you hope to research for your final project of the program. This may be one essay, or two separate essays depending upon the school.

Pursuing a one-year online DNP program will require you to take on a full-time course load. Once in the program you will likely discuss health ethics, policy, evidence-based practice, and more.
