How Do I Get Administrative Medical Assistant Certification?

Certification is not required, but the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that it is recommended and may lead to higher pay or additional employment opportunities. You can gain certification through professional organizations, including the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the Association of Medical Technologists (AMT). Both require you to have a degree from an accredited school, though AMT will allow you to take the exam if you have been working as a medical assistant for at least five years. The AAMA certification must be renewed every five years. You may also be able to get certification in certain specialties, such as podiatry or opthalmology.

Job DutiesFile records, schedule appointments, taking vital signs, patient exam prep

What Education Do I Need?

While some administrative medical assistant positions are entry-level, most employers prefer employees who have a degree. Many community colleges and vocational schools offer both associate degrees and certificate programs in either general medical assisting or administrative medical assisting. These programs take about two years to complete and qualify you to sit for a certification exam. Some courses and programs may be offered online.

What Would I Do?

An administrative medical assistant works in a doctor's office, health clinic, hospital or other medical environment. As an administrative medical assistant, you would file medical records, interact with insurance companies and schedule appointments. You may deal directly with patients, greeting them when they arrive and talking to them over the phone.

In a smaller office, you may be expected to work as a general medical assistant if there is not enough work to justify having separate administrative and clinical assistants. In that case, you will also be expected to document vital signs, perform some lab tests and prepare patients for examination.

What Jobs Are Available to Me?

Aside from working as a medical assistant, you may also be able to work as a records clerk, medical secretary, insurance biller or admissions clerk. Employment opportunities are expected to be plentiful for medical assistants, including those in administration, according to the BLS.
