Do I Need an Audio Production Bachelor's Degree?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), if you're looking for a position as an audio-visual equipment technician or broadcast technician, a formal, technical training program or a program leading to an associate's degree may be sufficient for an entry-level position. However, because of the stiff competition for jobs, you may find that a bachelor's degree may give you a better chance for employment. The same might be said for a position as a sound engineer.

Though certificate and associate's degree programs are somewhat more plentiful than bachelor's degree programs, you may be able to locate a baccalaureate degree program in audio production through a school's communication technologies department. The Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) is a non-profit professional association that maintains a list of certified schools that offer technical training in broadcast engineering and similar areas.

What Are Some Degree Specifics?

A program usually consists of about 120 credits and takes about four years to complete. Depending on school policy and the exact make-up of the program, you can earn a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Audio Production. Because of the large amount of hands-on work required, including practicum experiences and lab sessions, online programs may be difficult to find.

Typical courses that you might find in a program can include audio fundamentals, sound production, radio station operations, research, Pro Tools, MIDI sequencing, multi-track recording and studio techniques. You may be required to complete a capstone project during your senior year. This might entail creating, producing and directing a complete production.

Practicum experiences commonly take place at the school's recording facilities or production studio. In addition to practicum experiences, you may be required to serve a hands-on internship or externship at a school-approved professional facility.

What is the Occupational Outlook?

The BLS projected that overall employment for broadcast and sound engineering technicians and radio operators would increase 8% from 2016-2026. In May 2018, the BLS determined that the median annual wage for broadcast technicians was $40,080. For audio and video equipment technicians the mean annual salary was $48,940, while sound engineering technicians came in at $63,500.
