International Business Doctoral Degree
If you enjoy learning about the theories behind business across the globe, you might be interested in earning a doctoral degree in the field. This article looks at the typical curriculum and how to earn the degree.
What Does Earning an International Business Doctorate Entail?
Many colleges and universities allow you to earn a Doctor of Business Administration with a concentration in international business or a Doctor of Philosophy in International Business Administration. As part of your doctoral degree program, you gain a deep understanding of the role of business in a global society by learning the role of economics, political science and organizational management in various countries. Your studies last no more than five years and are research-based, giving you a chance to engage in academic studies to gain a sense of economic and business models in foreign countries.
Before enrolling, you need to earn an undergraduate degree. Some colleges also take into account your professional experience in the business industry, as well as any previous research.

What's the Curriculum Like?
Your college may allow you to participate in a study abroad program and immerse yourself in a foreign country to learn about the business industry outside of the United States. Because you're earning a doctorate, it's common for colleges to require students to complete a dissertation by the end of their studies. For the most part, online doctoral degree programs in this field are rare - but you may be able to take some of your courses through a distance-education format. Your courses are likely to cover:
- Theories of globalization
- Multinational marketing
- Global business strategy
- International accounting and financing
- Corporate and international finance
- Organizational behavior
What's My Potential Career Outlook?
Once you earn your doctorate, you may be able to find work in the business world as a manager, executive or consultant. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected that employment for top executives will grow 8% from 2016-2026.
