Courses for EKG Technicians

Get information on the training required to become an electrocardiogram (EKG) technician and see some of the courses you'll need to take. Learn about the length of these certificate programs and where to find them. Schools offering Cardiovascular Sonography degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Courses Will I Take?

EKG machines monitor the electric impulses generated by the heart. EKG technicians are also known as cardiac monitor technicians, telemetry technicians, and 12-lead EKG techs. The job title may vary, but the skills are the same. Your coursework will focus on human cardiovascular processes as well as the operation of electrocardiogram and echocardiogram machines. Classroom-based courses are combined with practical learning experiences in a laboratory setting and could help to prepare you for certification through the EKG Technician Exam administered by the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT). Some of the core course subjects you can expect to find in an EKG technician training program include:

Cardiovascular and Medical Terminology

This course typically introduces the student to the vascular system and the medical terminology used, including prefixes, root words and how to determine word meaning. These classes may also cover the body systems related to electrocardiography.

Echocardiography

The cardiovascular system and the science behind electrocardiography is usually the focus of this type of course. Students might learn the basics of interpretation, as well as the electrophysiology of the heart. Cardiac emergencies and treatment modalities may also be discussed.

Phlebotomy EKG Clinical

This course focuses on the hands-on skills necessary to become an EKG technician. Topics covered may include record keeping, quality control, and patient communication. Students should expect to work in a clinic environment under a mentor/supervisor.

Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation

Students in this course usually learn how to identify the rhythms from the four areas: atria, sinus node, ventricles and junctures, as well as normal/abnormal rhythms. Heart anatomy may also be discussed, as well as the physiology of the cardiac system.

EKG Monitor Course

This type of course might cover the ins and outs of the ECG equipment, including 12-lead ECG electrode placement and configuring the axis. Troubleshooting technical issues may also be discussed, as well as common heart arrhythmias. Placement and common issues with the 24-hour Holter monitor may also be covered.

Where Can I Find EKG Technician Training Courses?

These courses are primarily available through certificate programs at colleges throughout the U.S., and some programs are offered through a college's extension program. Due to the hands-on nature of much of the curriculum, coursework is not typically offered online. Some certificate programs can be completed in as little as seven weeks.
