What Will I Learn?

You will learn all aspects of audio and video production from scriptwriting to sound and video editing. You'll gain practice using production equipment and software programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Final Cut Studio and Avid Media Composer. You can create projects in DVD, CD or digital video formats. Common topics that you'll explore include:

  • Video production
  • Directing
  • Screenwriting
  • Audio recording and producing
  • Graphic effects and animation
  • Video editing
  • Media theory

The final portion of an undergraduate digital media production program is usually spent on internship. You often graduate from an associate's or bachelor's degree program with a portfolio or reel of your work that you may present to prospective employers.

Can I Study Online?

Bachelor's degree programs in digital media production involve actual production and hands-on experiences, so it is uncommon for these programs to be offered entirely online. You may opt to take online bachelor's degree programs in multimedia communications with a specialty in short-form production or a certificate in digital media productions, which could be offered partially online.

In online programs, you will interact with teachers and fellow students through e-mails, discussion boards and instant messenger. You could create short videos and webisodes online and share them on the Internet for class feedback. You may be required to purchase specific software programs related to graphic design and digital media.

What Careers Will I Qualify For?

With an undergraduate degree in digital media production, you could pursue various artistic positions in multimedia and web production, design and editing. You could be a multimedia producer, animator or artist. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that demand for this job sector should be as fast as average from 2016 to 2026 due to an increasing need for special effects and 3D animation in films, video games and television (www.bls.gov). According to the BLS, multimedia artists and animators earned an annual mean salary of $78,230 as of May 2018. According to the BLS, employment of multimedia artists and animators is projected to grow 8 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations.

Another career option is to be a film or video editor, but this field is quite competitive, so you might want to earn your bachelor's degree for greater employment opportunities. Based on the BLS report, film and video editors made a yearly mean salary of $86,830 as of May 2018. With a greater demand in movies and TV programs, being a video producer or director with your degree could also be a good option. BLS reported that as of May 2018, producers and directors received an annual mean salary of $89,840.
