What You Need to Know

Miami-based students interested in pursuing a career as an emergency medical technician (EMT) have a number of programs and schools from which to choose, leading to certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees. There are three levels of EMTs; this article introduces students to training options on the EMT-Basic and EMT-Paramedic levels. All paramedic students must first complete EMT-Basic training and be certified as an EMT-B by passing the requisite exam offered by the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT). Admission to an EMT-Basic program typically requires individuals to be 18 years or older and hold a high school diploma or GED. Programs include hands-on training and, as such, may require students to provide immunization records and/or pass background checks and drug screenings.
