In the Boston area, you can pursue an EMT training program to prepare for the Basic or paramedic level of emergency care. A longer certificate requires two to four semesters of study, and these programs prepare you for the paramedic examination.

Boston College's EMT-B course lasts 148 hours and can enable you to take the basic EMT state examination.
