What Are Early Childhood Development Degree and Diploma Programs?

Early childhood development programs provide training for creating and facilitating initiatives that effect the well-being and life of infants, toddlers and young children. These initiatives involve education, mental and physical health, child care and social development. Programs that are synonymous or related to early childhood development include early childhood education, early childhood services and early child care management.

These programs are offered through both on-campus and distance learning delivery formats. Professional diplomas and all levels of undergraduate and graduate degrees are available. Diploma programs typically don't require general education courses, but credits can be transferred to associate's degree programs.

What Courses Will I Take?

Your curriculum will cover the fundamental precepts of child development, such as infant development, toddler development, sociology of the family and development of young children. You may receive training on various educational principles, including early childhood language arts and methods, creative activities for early childhood, math and science methods, literacy development and curriculum development.

An opportunity is also available to learn about the different aspects of physical well-being through topics in nutrition and health education. Communication and mental health topics may be discussed through coursework on intercultural communications, cognitive psychology, pediatric neuropsychology and cross-cultural psychology.

What Is My Job Outlook?

You could work in a variety of roles, including as a consultant, caseworker, teacher, childcare worker and school administrator. Your degree level and experience may determine whether you are employed in an entry-level, mid-management or executive position. For example, while your professional diploma or associate's degree may yield work opportunities in child day care services, a bachelor's degree is generally the minimum educational requirement for a kindergarten and elementary school teacher. A bachelor's degree may be sufficient to become an education administrator in a day care; however, graduate degrees are usually required for public and private school principals.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the job rate for elementary, middle, and high school principals is projected to grow 7% from 2016-2026 (www.bls.gov). The employment rate for kindergarten and elementary school teachers is projected to also grow 7%, and the job rate for childcare workers is expected to increase 7% during the same period.
