What Is an Education Specialist Degree?

Degree titles you may earn beyond a master's in education include a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and Education Specialist (Ed.S.). If you wish to do research in academia or hold a leadership position in education, you should consider pursuing a Ph.D. or Ed.D. If, however, you are a teacher, school psychologist or educational technologist interested in perfecting your practice and developing leadership skills, you should consider the Ed.S.

The Education Specialist is a terminal degree beyond the master's that doesn't require as much time as earning a doctorate. Your Ed.S. program may have different purposes than a Ph.D. or Ed.D. Therefore, credit earned while pursuing your Ed.S. wouldn't automatically be transferrable to an Ed.D. or Ph.D. program later in your career. Certain Ed.S. programs, however, are designed for those with the ultimate goal of earning a doctorate. Typical Ed.S. requirements include 30 semester hours of coursework beyond the master's level, extensive internship experiences and a final comprehensive exam.
