To qualify for the certification exam, you must have an active registered nurse license and at least a master's degree from an accredited family nurse practitioner program. Your education must include advanced courses in pharmacology, health assessment and pathophysiology, as well as classes in disease prevention, disease management, health promotion and differential diagnosis. Additionally, your program must have involved at least 500 clinical hours of advanced practice family nursing (www.nursecredentialing.org).

Certification Prerequisites Active RN license, master's degree, 500 clinical hours of family nursing
Examination Subjects Clinical management, theoretical foundations of advanced nursing, health care policy

What Training is Available?

You can find training programs at the master's degree, post-master's certificate and doctoral degree levels. Before you can enroll in one of these graduate programs, you'll need at least a bachelor's degree. Additionally, you may be required to take the Graduate Record Exams (GRE) and hold a license as a registered nurse.

Master's degree programs usually take two years to complete, while post-master's certificate programs can be completed in 1-2 semesters, and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs can take up to three years. Your courses might cover health care policy, clinical research, advanced clinical assessment and health promotion. You'll also complete clinical practicums where you gain experience caring for patients. At some schools, you can complete the didactic portion of your curriculum online.

What Is the Exam Like?

The computer-based FNP-BC exam is comprised of 175 questions. Of these, only 150 are scored. The other 25 are pretest questions used to gauge your performance. The test covers five areas of study: clinical assessment, clinical management, theoretical foundations of advanced nursing, the professional role of the family nurse practitioner and health care policy. If you would like to take practice tests, the ANCC has free study aids available on its website.
