Are There Flight Engineer Schools?

With advances in technology, computer systems and copilots are performing many flight engineer duties. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, many pilots and copilots begin their careers as flight engineers. You may stand a better chance of employment as a pilot if you already hold a flight engineer's license. Similarly, you may want to attend an accredited flight school and earn a pilot's license to prepare for a flight engineer's position.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) maintains an online list of approved schools offering aviation programs that may prepare you to sit for the licensing examination to become a flight engineer. The National Center for Education Statistics maintains an online, searchable database of postsecondary institutions. As of 2011, a search reveals more than 100 schools that offer programs leading to degrees relevant to becoming a professional pilot or member of a flight crew. You can locate programs offered through an institution's school or department of business and technology, applied engineering and technology or aviation.

What Degrees Are Available?

Depending on the school, a 2-year program can consist of 64-76 credits. Programs can lead to an Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science in a field such as aviation or pilot technology. Programs include instruction in commercial and private piloting, aircraft engines and systems, instrumentation, air navigation and computers.

Schools may offer you the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science in Aviation, Bachelor of Applied Technology or Bachelor of Commercial Aviation. Programs may be presented by way of a cooperative effort between the college and a commercial flight school. A 4-year program consists of at least 120 credits. In addition to courses similar to those found in an associate's degree program, bachelor's degree programs may include courses such as multi-engine theory and procedures, applied meteorology, engine operations and aerodynamics. You may also have the opportunity to serve an internship.

There are plenty of associate's degrees for flight engineers, especially in the field of aviation. Choose from degrees in aviation business administration and aviation maintenance.

Are There Online Programs Available?

Because of the necessity of in-person, practical flight training, there are no flight engineer-related programs presented entirely online. However, schools may offer hybrid programs. Hybrid programs are those that present a portion of their courses online. These can include business and management courses, general education requirements, flight theory courses and ground school.

Am I Licensed Upon Graduation?

Graduation is not licensure. In order to perform the duties of flight engineer, you must hold an appropriate FAA license. You can obtain a flight engineer's license by sitting for the FAA Flight Engineer Knowledge Test. You may sit for one or all of three ratings classes, including turbojet, turboprop and reciprocating engines. Areas in which you are tested include theory, meteorology, operational procedures, airplane equipment, airplane systems, limitations and math computations.
