Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

MIT's OpenCourseWare (OCW) system offers biochemistry courses for both undergraduates and graduates. Biochemistry Laboratory

Graduate Biochemistry

This course was co-taught by three professors and made available for classroom instruction in the Fall 2001 semester. Although no assignments are available for viewing, this class was created to include problems sets, quizzes and exams for traditional students.

What Will I Learn?

The course focuses on basic biochemical concepts and the mathematical and laboratory tools and techniques that biochemists use to analyze problems. Topics include the functions, structures and binding actions of catalytic proteins.

You could read lecture notes on topics such as kinetics, mystery protein and molecular graphics. The course provides reviews of the concepts underlying chemical equilibrium and chemical thermodynamics.

Biochemistry and Pharmacology of Synaptic Transmission

This class is open to both undergrads and grads, and is one of the more recent courses from MIT (Fall of 2007). The class was design so students could meet for weekly lectures and recitation sessions.

What Will I Learn?

This class emphasizes study on the neurotransmission process, particularly chemicals that carry signals to nerve terminals. Topics of study include monoamine transmitter chemicals like dopamine and seratonin, neuromodulators, such as adenosine and the role of certain neurotransmitters in human diseases.

What Materials Are Provided?

This entire course can be downloaded as a PDF, along with study materials on topics ranging from antidepressants to neurotransmitter release. A list of required readings with links to the textbooks for purchase is also available.

University of California (UC) - Irvine

UC Irvine offers a course on Molecular Biology and Biochemistry that was developed to help teachers prepare for the math and science portions of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET). In particular, this class helps prepare potential teachers for the CSET Science Subtest II and is not available for credit.

What Will I Learn?

The course explores the structure, functions and chemical compounds of living organisms. You also learn how proteins are made and examine the process of photosynthesis.

What Materials Are Provided?

The course includes eight topics, each with diagnostic quizzes and refresher information. The online program includes slides that explain the topics to you and highlights the information related to biochemistry that is needed to pass the CSET biochemistry exam.
