Where Can I Find Free Online Business Courses?

The University of California, Irvine, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology offer free online business courses for interested students. Course options are available in alternate areas of business, including finance, economics, and technology. These non-credit courses may include audio or video lectures, readings, assignments, exams and projects.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

MIT offers courses in business through its OpenCourseWare (OCW) project. The business analysis using financial statements course was originally offered to graduate students on campus at MIT. Another OCW course offered by MIT, a technology-based business transformation course was also initially taught to graduate students. These courses are now available online for free in a non-credit format.

What Will I Learn?

With these courses, you will study how financial data is used to analyze and value businesses. Additional topics include financial reports and economic risk management, how technology is used to implement and streamline business strategies, and obstacles to technology-based business transformation, such as company culture and hierarchies.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

You could perform a financial analysis of a technology company using its public financial documents and estimate the cost of capital for the stock of another company. You could also write a plan outlining how new technology can be used to transform a company's marketing strategy or culture. This assignment was originally intended for small groups of students.

What Materials Are Provided?

The course provides lecture notes on topics such as cash flow analysis, company valuation and earnings management. You can access two quizzes with solutions and a spreadsheet of financial risk factors. Some course materials are only available in Microsoft Excel file format. A link is provided on the course homepage that allows you to download Microsoft Excel Viewer software for free. PDF and audio files of lecture notes are available, as well. Materials include links to articles about business transformation and innovation.

The University of California, Irvine, offers a business and sustainability video lecture through its OCW system. The lecture is available online for free.

How Is the Lecture Structured?

The 98-minute video features a panel of three speakers. They are Greg Shank, Vice President, CTG Energetics, Inc.; Kirwan Rockefeller, Ph.D., Director of the Sustainability Leadership program at UC - Irvine Extension; and Dinker Anand of Toshiba AEC, Inc. A question-and-answer session with audience members follows the presentations.

What Does the Lecture Cover?

The video presentation provides three different views of how businesses can approach the issue of sustainability. Using case studies, speakers explore the reasons that companies pursue sustainability and discuss the obstacles and opportunities involved in the creation of a green economy.
