Where Can I Find Free Online Geometry Courses?

Free online geometry courses are available at the Open University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Course topics will cover things like algebraic geometry and differential geometry. Schools offering Mathematics degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What You Need to Know

Accredited universities and other OpenCourseWare platforms offer free online courses in geometry. These non-credit courses may cover different types of geometry, such as differential geometry or algebraic geometry. Both undergraduate- and graduate-level courses are available. Your course may include optional assignments, lecture notes and quizzes. Specialized software applications are sometimes required.

The Open University

An introductory geometry course offered by The Open University uses chapter-based lessons and interactive exercises with answers provided. You may need to install the free program GeoGebra and have an updated version of Java on your computer in order to view all course materials.

What Will I Learn?

Basic concepts in geometry are covered in three chapters. You'll learn how to calculate the area and volume of objects, measure angles and draw pie charts.

What Materials Can I Access?

You'll study using text-based lessons with illustrations, PDF files and interactive problems. A self-graded test is provided at the end of the course.

Are There Any Assignments?

As you work through the sections in each chapter, you'll solve problems pertaining to the material you cover. There are a total of 23 sections with 2-4 problems each.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Two geometry courses are presented here. Professor Paul Seidel originally designed the differential geometry OpenCourseWare (OCW) course for undergraduate Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students. This course is intended for advanced mathematics students with a strong understanding of basic and intermediate geometry. Portions of the course are now available for free in a non-credit format. Professor Kiran Kedlaya first taught the OCW algebraic geometry class to graduate students at MIT. A strong foundation in geometry is necessary to understand the topics discussed. You won't receive credit for this course.

Differential Geometry

What Materials Are Available?

You'll have access to four chapters of lecture notes and ten homework assignments in PDF format. No answers to assignment questions are available. You may purchase course textbooks by using the links provided in the syllabus.

What Will I Learn?

You'll learn about different facets of curvature, like hypersurfaces and distance-based geometry. You'll also study how to calculate rotation and compute the fundamental forms of geometric shapes.

Algebraic Geometry

What Materials Are Available?

The syllabus includes links to the textbooks originally used in the course. You'll be able to work through 12 problem sets and download lecture notes in PDF format. You won't have access to a professor, but a student Q & A section is provided that addresses common trouble areas.

What Will I Learn?

The class focuses on the idea of geometric schemes. You'll learn about morphism properties, homological algebra and coherent sheaves.
