Where Can I Find Free Online Phlebotomy Courses?

Find online phlebotomy courses online with the following listed schools. Students will be able to learn about this area of study at no cost and at their own pace.

What You Need to Know

Free phlebotomy lessons can be found online offered by accredited community colleges and 4-year universities. Not only can you learn how to draw blood, you could also learn techniques for working with different age groups and how to color code blood samples depending on their purpose. Free non-credit courses can familiarize you with your job duties, but you'll still need to undergo on-the-job training or complete a formal program before you can work independently.

Loyola University Chicago

Arterial puncture is one of three common puncture methods that phlebotomists use to collect blood specimens. Loyola University Chicago's Medical Education Network offers an arterial puncture course that teaches this procedure for drawing blood from an artery in the wrist area using a syringe. This course is not for credit and doesn't provide feedback from an instructor.

What Will I Learn?

You will learn every step of the arterial puncture process, starting with seating the patient comfortably and assessing the patency of arteries. The course will teach you how to apply local anesthesia, draw heparin into a syringe and insert the needle in an artery. Possible complications resulting from arterial puncture are also covered.

What Materials Are Included?

This course provides a multiple-choice quiz with nine questions and answers. You can also view a three-minute video on arterial puncture.

Austin Community College

Tubes is a course offered by the Medical Laboratory Technology Program at Austin Community College (ACC). This free course teaches aspiring phlebotomists how to correctly identify blood specimen tubes based on the colors of their tops.

The college also offers an age-specific care and phlebotomy course, presented in PowerPoint format. The course aims to provide information about phlebotomy skills and training for people interested in pursuing the field.

Tubes

How Does the Course Work?

When drawing blood, phlebotomists use several collection tubes that each contain a different additive which reacts with blood in a specific way. This course uses pictures of tube tops and corresponding written content to teach you how to identify tubes by their top colors.

What Will I Learn?

You will learn how to draw blood and fill specimen tubes in the correct order to avoid inaccurate results and prevent contamination. You will also learn the composition of each additive, how it interacts with blood and the names of different types of blood tests.

Age Specific Care and Phlebotomy

What Does the Course Cover?

This course covers skills that the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requires for providing phlebotomy care to patients in eight age groups. There are tips to help phlebotomy managers create study materials and practice questions for JCAHO's annual exam on age-specific treatment standards. The presentation also outlines steps for assessing and observing phlebotomy skills.

What Materials Are Provided?

The course is taught through a PowerPoint slide show. You can access a link to an ACC web page that provides multiple-choice quizzes on phlebotomy with answers. Other materials include case studies on drawing blood and sample contamination with IV blood. There are also illustrations of blood drawing techniques, outlines of topics covered in ACC's phlebotomy classes and other phlebotomy resources.
