To take the mammography certification exam, you must be registered with the ARRT in radiography. You must also submit documentation that you have met the clinical experience requirements. These requirements include proving you have performed a mammographic examination on at least 75 patients, demonstrating your radiographic critique and interpretation skills, completing mammography training and education, having experience with interventional and special examinations, and understanding quality control procedures.

Ethical requirements you must meet include proving you are of good moral character and meeting the standards in the ARRT Rules of Ethics. This includes misdemeanor or felony issues and any criminal proceedings in the juvenile court involving drugs or alcohol. Also, you must report any restrictions on professional licenses, registrations or certifications that you have had.

The ARRT examination tests your skills and knowledge in the area of mammography. You'll prove your knowledge of the typical tasks required and the procedures involved. Topics covered on the exam include patient care, instrumentation, anatomy, and mammographic techniques. You are allowed to attempt the exam three times within a three-year period.

To maintain your certification, you must meet continuing education requirements and continue to meet the ethical requirements. Recertification must be completed every two years.
