What Is a Cosmetology Rep?

Cosmetology representatives work for beauty supply or manufacturing companies, selling their products to vendors, salons and stores. They may contact potential buyers over the phone or travel directly to store and salon sites to show cosmetic products to potential buyers. Representatives encourage businesses to buy their products by describing and demonstrating their uses. From there, they negotiate the terms of the sale and draw up a sales contract to be submitted for processing. After a sale has been made, representatives follow up with the buyer in order to ensure their satisfaction and pave the way for future transactions.

Job Description of a Cosmetology Representative

As a cosmetology rep, you must travel often, meeting with customers at their location, to pitch and sell products. You explain how products work, provide demonstrations and hand out literature. As part of promoting products, you may provide free samples, introduce special offers and host promotional events.

As a salesperson, your job also involves developing relationships with your customers to gain their trust and create a long-term business partnership. You collect and submit orders, follow up with customers after they receive their orders, resolve issues with products and provide customer service to ensure customer satisfaction.

Some companies may require you to meet sales quotas, set up displays at customer's locations and help customers develop sales strategies. You may also have to keep logs of customer meetings, travel and daily expenses. It may also be your responsibility to maintain a schedule of visits with your customers.

What Training or Education Is Required?

According to job ads from March 2015 on CareerBuilder.com, employers often expect you to be a licensed cosmetologist and have experience within the beauty industry. To become a licensed cosmetologist, you must complete a state-approved cosmetology program and pass a licensing exam. A cosmetology program may result in a diploma, certificate or associate degree.

In a cosmetology program, you learn the skills and gain the knowledge needed to pass the state licensing exam. Programs usually cover topics in sanitation, state laws, anatomy, hair treatment methods, beauty sales, skin and nail care, customer service, hair cutting methods and basic business skills.

Cosmetology licenses are handled at the state level through the state licensing board. The requirements for licensing typically include completing an approved program in cosmetology and passing the licensing exam. Exams usually test skills and knowledge through oral, written and practical tests.

What Other Requirements Must I Meet?

Employers also usually require sales experience and a valid driver's license with reliable transportation. You need to be able to operate a laptop computer and competently use e-mail and spreadsheet software. This job requires traveling almost daily, so you may need to be able to work weekends and nights, travel various distances and be away from home for periods of time. It is also important you are able to work independently because most of your work is done without direct supervision. Organization, time management and communication skills are also good qualities to possess.

Instead of working as a sales representative for a cosmetics company, you could get a job as a representative for a food company. These representatives may travel to grocery stores, restaurants, cafes and other food service establishments to encourage them to use or sell a particular food item. You need to have at least a high school diploma for a job as a representative for a company that sells non-technical goods. Alternatively, if you want to get a job in the field of cosmetics, you could consider becoming an esthetician. Estheticians often work in salons and spas, where they offer a wide range of services, including the application of cosmetics, as well as waxing and laser treatments. To become and esthetician, you need to complete a postsecondary training program.
