Job Duties of a LSAT Tutor

As a LSAT tutor or instructor, you will assist students in preparing for the test. As an instructor, you will typically teach a group or class of students, while tutoring is usually with only one student. If you are working one-on-one with a student, you get to offer more personalized attention and focus on the student's problem areas. With a group of students, you may focus more on teaching in areas where the majority of students are having problems.

Students typically take the LSAT in June or September, so you will be the busiest during the preceding months. You may teach students about the types of questions to expect, managing nerves before and during the test, the different sections of the test and tips for getting a high score. Practice tests can assist you in assessing what areas of the test your students need more help with. You may use study materials or develop your own lesson plans, which cover each test section to help students become more familiar with the test.

What Requirements Must I Meet?

Employers generally expect a LSAT tutor to have taken and received a high score on the test. It is common for employers to expect a LSAT score of over 170. Experience in teaching or law may also be helpful. Some employers may require a bachelor's or Juris Doctor (JD) degree. In some cases, employers may provide training and require no experience to be a tutor.

Employers often look for teaching and communication skills, as well as the ability to explain concepts easily. You need to demonstrate your abilities as a teacher and your knowledge of the test. Most employers don't provide any type of training on the LSAT, so it is up to you to know the test design and subject matter being tested.

Where Can I Find Employment?

There are several options for employment as a LSAT tutor. You may work for a private company that specializes in tutoring for the LSAT and other similar tests or who offers different types of tutoring services. You also have the option of working for tutoring services that are connected with colleges. The last option is providing services to students through your own business.

What Are Some Related Alternative Careers?

If you like tutoring, you might also be interested in getting a job as a full-time teacher. For instance, you could get a job teaching a law-related subject like history or social studies to high school students. This would require a bachelor's degree and a teaching license for work in a public school. Alternatively, if you have a law degree, you could choose to work as a practicing lawyer. Within this field, you could choose from many specializations, including family law, tax law and environmental law.
