How Do I Earn a Certificate in Public Administration?

Certificates in public administration are available in two forms. Schools may offer an undergraduate certificate in public administration for students without a degree, a certificate at the graduate level or both.

Basic Certificate in Public Administration

A basic certificate in public administration that does not require a bachelor's degree is designed for students looking for an entry-level position in public administration, as well as students already in the field hoping to hone their skills. These certificates are commonly available from 2-year community colleges or continuing education departments at larger, 4-year universities. These certificates typically take two semesters to complete. They may include courses in how local, state and federal governments create policy. Students may also take courses in community development, emergency management, fundraising and grant applications. A certificate in public administration can later be used to pursue a more advanced degree.

Graduate Certificate in Public Administration

A graduate certificate in public administration is a yearlong program, but with a more rigorous course load and stricter admission requirements than the basic certificate. These certificates are generally designed for those who hold a related bachelor's degree or are planning to pursue further graduate work in public administration. Many certificates are offered in conjunction with a full public administration graduate department, giving students more options for electives and specializations. Courses cover a range of subjects, including:

  • Foundations of public administration
  • Social and economic policy in the United States
  • Administrative Ethics in the Public Sector
  • Grant and Contract Management
  • Intergovernmental Relations
