How to Make Textbooks Cheaper and More Effective at the Same Time

When is a book more than just a book? When it appears as an interactive digital e-book. With several companies introducing electronic textbooks for iPads, Kindles and other devices, it seems technology is poised to make learning more accessible, collaborative and just plain easier. And the fact that in most cases digital textbooks are less costly than standard tomes is definitely an added bonus!

Textbooks: The Next Generation

Remember using old paper bags as book covers? Or getting a used textbook so beaten up that pages were falling out of it? Those days may be gone forever, thanks to products being manufactured by digital textbook companies like Inkling and Kno. Even Bill Gates has stated that one day all textbooks will be replaced by tablet PCs.

And Gates could be right. According to a September 2011 story by nbcactionnews.com, more than 600 school districts from California to Florida are introducing iPads to their students. It's not hard to imagine that once students and teachers become accustomed to the interaction and other features that electronic textbooks can provide, it may be difficult if not impossible to return to physical books.

Digital textbooks offer a whole new way to access information. Take Inkling's newest version 2.0 for iPad. Within a book's interface you can link to study groups, observe expert notes and ask questions, create bookmarks and organize your own notes, conduct Internet searches, watch videos and navigate by touch-screen through 3-dimensional pictures. About all it doesn't do, it seems, is complete your assignments and take your exams.

'Be a Better Doctor'

Recently Matt MacInnis, founder and CEO of Inkling, appeared on a promotional video for his company's newest title, Essential Clinical Anatomy (or, as MacInnis calls it, ECA). Touting the digital book's nearly 300 test result exercises, interactive case studies and review questions and videos of clinical cases (much of which, of course, is not available in the standard textbook), MacInnis ends by saying, 'You should go download a free chapter. You'll be a better doctor.'

So will digital textbooks make you smarter? Or better at your chosen career? Well, probably not. . .but they do have the potential to make you a better student. And for cash-strapped college students (which are far from an extinct species!) the fact that electronic textbooks are cheaper than their 3-dimensional counterparts is a huge plus. According to a recent study by Campusbooks.com, digital textbooks, whether they are rented or bought, are cheaper 92% of the time.

As an example, electronic textbooks bought for the CourseSmart iPad app cost up to 50% less than paper textbooks. Some companies also offer students the cost-saving opportunity to purchase single chapters rather than the entire textbook. So go heed MacInnis' advice. You might not be a better doctor, or even a better student. But at the least, you'll be joining the wave of the future.
