Why Should I Earn This Degree?

An Islamic studies program can help you pursue a career that requires knowledge of Middle Eastern history, politics, culture, literature and language. Islamic studies programs complement other fields, such as anthropology, religion, political science, geography, architecture, law and history. Schools with a religious affiliation offer some programs; these programs generally prepare you for religious ministry.

What Can I Learn About?

Islamic studies programs are interdisciplinary. You'll be expected to complete requirements offered by two or more departments that cover Islamic art, social science and the humanities in addition to courses that deal with law, diplomacy or public policy. You may also be expected to complete research projects or define a specific research focus while earning your master's or Ph.D. Some programs - usually at the doctoral level - have a language requirement. You can choose to learn Hebrew, Arabic, Turkish, Hausa, Persian or Berber, among others.

If you enroll in a school focused on theology, you'll take courses that cover the Bible, the Qur'an and Islamic texts. You may also learn about Islamic culture and missionary work in the Middle East. Programs focused on diplomacy, politics or public policy will provide a foundation in Middle Eastern history, Islamic culture and current events. You might also have to complete courses in anthropology.

Ph.D. programs usually walk you through the depth and breadth of Islamic culture and history, including texts that cover the beginning of Islamic culture, Western influences and current events. Study may be broken down into topics pertaining to theological concepts, Qur'anic studies, Sunni legal constructs and mystical theory.

What Do I Need to Enroll?

There are no prerequisites for a bachelor's degree program other than a high school diploma or a GED. You can enroll in a graduate certificate program that offers Islamic studies courses after you earn a bachelor's degree.

Graduate programs designed to prepare you for religious ministry may have prerequisites in Biblical studies, Middle Eastern languages or Islamic culture. You may also need previous experience in theology or religious ministry. The minimum requirement to enroll in a program that awards a Master of Arts or Ph.D. is a bachelor's degree. Many Ph.D. programs only admit students who know two or more research languages, particularly French or German.
