What is Java?

Java includes a variety of software products and a programming language created by Sun Microsystems in collaboration with its parent company, Oracle. As a programmer, you can use Java to create applications for desktop computers, mobile devices, servers and the Internet. When you write code in Java, you tell computers and similar devices how to gather, process, alter or transmit certain data in the form of bytecode, or a specific set of instructions. Java is one of the most commonly used programming languages because it can handle a variety of tasks coordinated among PC, phone and Internet platforms.

You can use Java Standard Edition to write code for desktop computers and most operating systems. Java Enterprise Edition is used to create applications that run on servers. If you use Java Micro Edition, you can create applications for cell phones and other mobile devices. You also can use a variety of other Java technologies or products focused on more specific uses, such as those in microprocessing, databases or multimedia.

Where Do I Get Certified?

The Oracle Corporation sets the standards you'll need to meet for Java certification, including exams. You can earn certification directly through one of these organizations. However, some schools offer individual classes that will prepare you for certification. For example, you can take individual courses tailored to Oracle Certified Professional, Oracle Certified Associate and Oracle Certified Master Java certifications.

Many courses and certifications are designed for students with little or no knowledge of Java programming. Many schools don't have any prerequisites to enroll in a class unless you're looking to study intermediate or advanced Java programming. You also should be aware that some of these classes don't provide college credit.

What Can I Learn by Pursuing Certification?

If you take classes to prepare for Oracle Certified Associate certification or another basic certification, you can familiarize yourself with what Java programming does, how it works and what its limitations are. You also can learn about object-oriented programming, mapping HTML and Web projects to where they interface with Java applications and how Java applications can support other technologies. You'll also learn about syntax, programming theory and ways Java interfaces with computer operating systems.

Why Should I Get Certified?

Earning Java certification demonstrates to employers that you have professional expertise. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a bachelor's degree is required for many computer programming positions, but you also can enter the field with an associate's degree or certificate (www.bls.gov). However, according to the BLS, the key to advancement is continually updating your skills and obtaining additional certifications.
