Can I Major In Linguistics?

Many colleges offer linguistics as an undergraduate major. Linguistics is an interdisciplinary field, blending studies of dialect, phonetics and syntax with history, anthropology and sociology. Linguistics is the study of languages and each language's particular sounds, grammatical rules and other characteristics. Depending on the school, you may be able to minor in a supplemental area, such as foreign languages, speech, anthropology or language pathology.

Degree Level Bachelor's degree
Common Courses Morphology, romantic languages, syntax, language development, sound structure
Learning Environment Only traditional on-campus degrees offered

What Will My Curriculum Be Like?

Many programs begin with an early history of language and the fundamentals of languages' sounds and structures. You'll take subjects in syntax, phonetics and morphology (the study of word structure). You'll learn to understand how languages have changed over time and by region, as well as exploring how dialects are created. You'll also learn how messages and emotions are conveyed through the way a person speaks. You may look at storytelling, Freudian slips, language development in children and the ways in which people interpret words and pitch.

You'll also explore semantics, sound structure, symbolic processes, language development, speech as a science and language disorders. You may also study world language policies, the study of words, romantic languages, American Sign Language and cultural languages. Once you have completed your program, you'll listen to languages in conversational contexts and pick up tones, messages and dialectic differences. You'll also be able to recognize sound waves, acoustics and pick up similarities between languages.

Can I Earn This Degree Online?

Linguistics programs at the bachelor's degree level aren't offered online. This is because linguistics programs are intensive in aural and verbal study. Though you may not be able to complete a full degree in linguistics, you may have some undergraduate options. Some colleges provide online linguistic courses that can be transferred to a college to meet a linguistic requirement or to be put towards an on-campus linguistic bachelor's degree program.
