Maintaining Academic Integrity: Finding the Right Resources

Are you finding yourself so overwhelmed by a class or project that you're tempted to plagiarize just that one little paragraph? Don't do it! There are resources out there that can help you get back on your feet while maintaining your academic integrity.

ebooks

Internet Libraries

Not sure where to start your research project? The Internet offers tons of free, legitimate sources of books and information, including:

  • Google Scholar, Google's compendium of academic articles and abstracts, many of which are available for free
  • Project Gutenberg, the Web's largest producer of free eBooks
  • The Internet Archive, a massive online library that includes free (and legal) video, music, audio and texts

If you can't find what you're looking for on any of these sites, try checking with your school's librarian. Many colleges and universities subscribe to online academic journal collections such as JSTOR, and your librarian can teach you how to access and search the relevant journals.

internet citations

Citation Guides

Now that you've collected your sources, it's important to cite them correctly. There are two ways that you'll need to cite each source: In-text and in your bibliography. In-text citations appear next to direct quotations or any place where you're drawing information from your sources. These are typically short references to the information found in the bibliography, or works cited list. Bibliography citations provide the full details of the books, articles and other sources you used so that a reader could easily look the information up themselves.

For in-text citations, you'll want to find out what style your professor prefers. There are many writing style standards used by academics, including APA, MLA and Chicago. If your academic discipline relies primarily on one style, consider purchasing the guide for that style for access to the latest updates in writing and citation standards. Otherwise, check back with your school librarian - most libraries offer free guides for all the major styles.

In the meantime, here are some free online resources to help you get started with correct citations and bibliographies:

  • Knight Cite, a free citation generator for many different types of resources in MLA, APA and Chicago, created by Calvin College
  • Easy Bib, a free online bibliography creator that makes it easy to enter your source info and build and print a bibliography in your chosen style - Easy Bib also includes free in-text citation guides for MLA and APA styles

student tutors

Tutoring

For many students, the temptation to cheat arises when they just don't understand the material. Rather than just giving up and plagiarizing, it's important to seek help. Here are a few places to start:

  • Office hours: Many professors and teaching assistants have office hours. Drop by or make an appointment to explain what you're missing and see if they can offer you more guidance.
  • Tutoring centers: Check with your college or university to find out if they have an on-campus tutoring center. Small schools may just have one resource; large institutions often offer separate centers for different subject areas. Bringing your homework and your questions to these centers can give you just the academic boost you need.
  • Online tutoring: What if you need help in the middle of the night? Online tutoring may be a solution. There are many websites that offer live, 24/7 tutoring services, such as Tutor Next and Eduwizards. However, be aware that good services usually aren't available for free. If you're on a budget, check out Plenty of Tutors, a site that allows users to post questions to the community and get bids for answers from tutors, rather than pay a flat rate.
