What Is an Online Master's Degree in Operations Management?

A master's degree program provides you with skills in planning, budgeting, human resources management or purchasing, as well as procedure assessment and cost efficiency. Online operations management degree programs are typically available as a Master of Science. Concentrations in areas such as supply chain management and global operations may be available. Entrance into the program, typically requires the completion of a bachelor's degree program. In addition to online programs, you may find hybrid programs that combine online and on-campus courses.

What's the Curriculum Like?

The curriculum includes didactic coursework in advanced business, management and leadership techniques. Additional coursework may include managerial statistics, business system design, organizational management, organizational ethics, strategic planning, managerial accounting and facilities management. In addition to coursework, you may have the opportunity to participate in workshops and complete a master's capstone project.

How Will I Learn?

Online learning is facilitated through Internet-based learning platforms, such as Blackboard. Additional learning platforms may include DVD's and podcasts. In addition, some programs require you to complete on-campus exams and orientations. The program can be completed around your schedule and may require about 15-20 study hours a week. The program requires specific software, an up-to-date computer and Internet access. In some instances, a pre-loaded notebook will be provided for you.

What Is the Job Outlook?

Operations managers can find positions in a variety of organizations, including management services, companies and local government. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported eight percent growth for general and operations managers between 2016 and 2026 (www.bls.gov). Additionally, the BLS projected keen competition for job openings due to the prestige and high pay. Salary.com reported median annual wages of $96,938 for operations managers in July 2016.
