Online Master's Degree Programs in Health Administration

Health administration graduate programs explore organizational management and current health policies. Learn about online and on-campus masters degree programs, courses of study and educational prerequisites.

What Courses Will I Take in an Online Master's Degree Program in Health Administration?

You will be trained in a combination of management practices and issues specifically affecting the health industry. Management topics include human resources, legal issues, financial management and marketing. You may study leadership issues, including theories on how to effectively manage in a complex organization. Most programs also include a course in ethics.

In order to prepare you for a management role in a health field, you will study many administration topics geared towards health care. This will include analysis of current domestic and international health policies. Additionally, you may study how managed care works, including benefit systems, such as private insurance, Medicare and Medicaid. In some programs, you will study the use of information systems in health care, such as computer databases of patient records.

Are There Any Prerequisites?

You will be required to possess a bachelor's degree, though most programs do not require a degree from a specific field. It is a common requirement among health administration master's degree programs that you have prior professional experience in a health field. In some cases, you may be required to demonstrate your interest in the program through the submission of an essay. Though some programs require the submission of your scores from the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), this is not a common requirement.

How Will My Online Program Differ from a Campus-Based Program?

Your coursework will be identical to what you would find in a campus-based program. In some programs, you will be required to complete short, intensive residencies on-campus, yet there are programs in which all work is completed online. Courses will be delivered using an online platform through which you will watch recorded lectures, submit homework assignments and participate in discussion groups. You will also communicate with faculty through this platform, as well as through email. You will need access to a computer with high-speed Internet access.
