What Types of Master's Degrees in Pharmacy Can I Earn?

You may pursue a master's degree in pharmacy administration if your interest is in management and business; joint degree programs offering a Master of Business Administration (MBA) along with a Master of Science in Pharmacy are also available. If you'd like to work on drug laws and policies, consider a master's degree in pharmacy regulations. What Will I Study?

Pharmacy administration degree programs may include coursework in pharmaceutical marketing, sales, and health care systems. Programs in drug laws and policies will have you studying federal regulations of pharmaceuticals, including drug costs, access, abuse statistics and distribution. In pharmacoeconomics programs, you examine the use of medicines and pharmacy services from an economics standpoint and learn how this data affects the decisions and policies made within the health care system. Depending on your program, you may be required to complete a master's thesis or comprehensive exam.

Are There Any Prerequisites?

You'll need a bachelor's degree in order to apply to a master's degree program in pharmacy. Some programs may prefer that your bachelor's degree is in pharmacy or a related field - such as chemistry, allied health or biology - but it's not required. For pharmacy administration programs, you may have to have completed some undergraduate prerequisites in business administration. Many programs will have a mixture of students from both pharmacy and non-pharmacy backgrounds; though this will include many students with a Pharm.D., such a degree is not typically required for admissions.

Are These Degrees Available Online?

Master's degrees in various pharmacy specializations are available if you're looking for online study. While some programs are offered entirely online, others have minimal on-campus requirements, such as weekend seminars or campus-based exams. Online programs require you to work well independently and with minimal regulated structure. Most courses are delivered asynchronously.

In order to complete your online degree, you'll need access to a computer with a high-speed Internet connection. You'll receive and submit assignments, watch lectures and correspond with faculty and students through an online classroom system such as Blackboard. Some programs have scheduled times during the week when you can chat live with teachers or students.
