What Is Mechatronics?

If you choose to study mechatronics, you'll be entering into a degree in engineering that combines engineering, computers, communication technologies, electrical and control engineering. Mechatronics involves the design and construction of products that can be remote-controlled and be programmed to have their own reactions, responses and even decision-making processes. Robots are one example of this; many machines developed with mechatronics principles are known as smart products.

As a mechatronics engineer, you'll create a number of modern computer-based machines that help to make life easier for people. For example, mechatronic machines are used in factories to provide quality product control. A vehicle that uses computers for such functions as traction control and electronic stability is another example of a mechatronic machine. Another example would be satellites that are used in space to capture images.

Can I Earn My Master's Degree in This Field?

Mechatronics degrees are available at the master's degree level. Many of the colleges that offer mechatronics as a master's degree list it as a concentration under an engineering degree. To enroll in such a program, you'll need an undergraduate engineering degree accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Schools may specify that your undergraduate degree be in electrical, mechanical or computer engineering.

Is This Degree Available Online?

Mechanical engineering master's degrees can be found online; however, mechatronics is such a specialized and inclusive program that it is a difficult subject to teach online. Adding to the difficulty of online education for this field is the fact that mechatronics draws from many engineering areas. Mechatronics students are expected to complete hands-on training in the design and modeling of some of their machines; such work requires on-campus attendance.
