What Education Would I Need?

In the natural health field, many education programs lack recognized accreditation, so you'll need to look closely at any programs that you may be considering. You can find certificate programs in the following fields:

  • Aromatherapy
  • Herbal medicine
  • Homeopathy

Few certificate programs, however, have accreditation recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

What About Graduate Programs?

You may find that the strongest accreditation in the natural health field is found in graduate-level education programs. Earning a Doctor of Naturopathy (ND), for example, would give you an in-depth knowledge of preventative medicine, natural health and appropriate holistic treatment options.

NDs are offered through a naturopathic medical school and are a 4-year program that can be attended after the successful completion of a bachelor's degree program. NDs learn the same sciences as a medical doctor, with a holistic approach incorporated into the education program. Finding an accreditated program can still be an issue at this level, as there are only seven accredited schools recognized by the American Association of Naturopathic Medical Colleges. The Council on Naturopathic Medical Education accredits naturopathic education programs.

How Could I Advance My Career?

To become licensed as an ND, you'll need to pass the Naturopathic Licensing Examinations (NPLEX). Not all states recognize licensing or certification in the natural health field, so you'll want to check your state's regulations to ensure you will be able to legally practice once you earn your degree or certification. Massage therapy and acupuncture are therapies in the natural health field that typically have higher recognition than other natural health therapies. You could advance your career by earning a certificate in massage therapy or a graduate degree in acupuncture; check for licensing laws in the area in which you'll practice these therapies.

An ND degree program will prepare you for a career as a general practitioner in the natural health field. You'll then have the option to undergo a residency program, in addition to any residencies you may have completed as part of a degree program. This will give you the opportunity to work under an experienced doctor, often in different medical specialties, while treating patients and beginning your naturopathic career.

What Are My Job Prospects?

Healthcare consultants can make a median salary of $71,056, as reported by PayScale.com in July 2018. Employment opportunities for all health educators were projected to increase 14% from 2016 to 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. With healthcare costs continuing to rise, employers will be looking for ways to cut costs by educating the public, opening the door for more consulting positions.
