What Are Certificate Programs Like?

Most certificate programs require you to have a bachelor's degree in nursing and, in many cases, expect you to be actively working in the profession. Work experience is another common requirement for nursing certificate programs.

There are a variety of certificate programs available, including those for school nurses, nursing educators, forensic nurses, emergency nurses or perioperative nurses. On the master's degree level, you can also get certificates for palliative care or being a nurse practitioner. Some certificate programs are offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. You may be able to find programs that include some online instruction.

What Nursing Training Programs Are There?

In order to be a registered nurse (RN), you need a degree in nursing. Some hospitals offer diploma programs, but you can earn an associate's degree through a community college or attend a university to earn a bachelor's degree. A bachelor's degree in nursing can give you the greatest opportunities for advancement and specialization. Some universities offer programs for you to get your bachelor's in nursing if you already have an associate's degree in nursing or a bachelor's degree in an unrelated field.

There are also master's programs available, such as those to become a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) or a nurse practitioner (NP). You can also become a practical nurse. Most practical nurse programs take about a year to complete and are offered at vocational schools or community colleges.

What Licensure Do I Need?

The exact license you need depends on your nursing specialty, but all nurses need to be licensed to practice. All states require you to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), and you can get certifications in your specialty if they're available. The American Nurses Credentialing Center offers a variety of certification exams for different specialties. These are generally not required, but are strongly recommended as they demonstrate that you have the practical knowledge necessary to work in your particular area.
