What You Need to Know

Iowa-based students have a number of nursing programs from which to choose, offered by public and private, two- and four-year schools. A diploma in practical nursing takes about one year to earn; an associate's degree as a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) requires five semesters of study. At least two bachelor's programs are offered in nursing, each of which takes about four year to complete; one of the programs accepts only currently registered nurses. Finally, a master's degree in nursing is available to RNs in possession of a bachelor's degree; completion of the graduate program takes two years for full-time students.

Nursing Diploma Program in Iowa

Indian Hills Community College

This program combines classroom instruction with laboratory and clinical experiences. Courses include medical terminology, human anatomy, developmental psychology and nursing essentials. Upon completion, you have the option of applying to the associate's degree program in nursing or taking the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

Nursing Associate's Degree Program in Iowa

Kirkwood Community College

This degree program prepares you to become an RN or licensed practical nurse (LPN). After being admitted to the school, you must complete a CNA course before starting the LPN or RN curriculum. In this program, you complete 5 semesters of study in the basics of nursing care and learn clinical skills through rotations in hospitals, nursing homes, mental health facilities, specialty clinics and home care agencies. You may graduate after the first 3 semesters with a practical nurse diploma, or continue through the last 2 semesters to earn your associate's degree. You have the choice of enrolling in a day program or a program that meets in the evenings and on weekends.

Nursing Bachelor's Degree Programs in Iowa

Allen College

This 5-semester option is designed for students who have completed the general education requirements and haven't yet received a nursing license. You must earn 124 credits in order to receive your BSN, including 67 credits in nursing courses, which may include nutrition, pharmacology, pediatric nursing care, clinical nursing and nursing leadership. You complete this program with a clinical internship and an exit exam.

The University of Iowa

This program is designed for RNs who have a nursing diploma or associate's degree and want to expand their career opportunities or prepare for graduate school. You must earn at least 128 credits to receive this degree, including 32 credits in core and elective courses pertaining to the nursing major. Core nursing courses include pathology, community and public health nursing, human genetics and health care finance. The majority of the program can be complete online.

Nursing Master's Degree Program in Iowa

Allen College

The family nurse practitioner specialization prepares students to become advanced practice nurses (APNs) and to provide quality primary care in rural health. You must earn at least 42 credits in order to receive this degree. At least 24 credits must be from MSN-level courses. Required core courses include population health, advanced nursing research, health care informatics and advanced nursing leadership. All courses in the MSN program are offered online. The clinical practicum comprises 600 hours of fieldwork.
