What Will I Learn in an Oncology Nurse Practitioner Program?

Oncology nurse practitioner programs are typically offered through schools of nursing as part of master's degree programs or graduate specialty programs in nursing. Your coursework in an oncology nurse practitioner program will likely build on your prior nursing education and experience. You'll take classes in pharmacology, health assessment, pediatric oncology, palliative care, pain management and pathophysiology. Your oncology courses will teach you how to recognize and treat common health problems found in adults and children with cancer. You'll learn how to diagnose and treat side effects of cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, and to prescribe medications that will not interfere with these treatments.

Common Course Topics Pharmacology, pediatric oncology, pain management, diagnosis and treatment of side effects, palliative care
Prerequisites Undergraduate transcript, GRE scores, Registered Nurse (RN) license, references, resume
Program Length Two to three years
Certification Offered through the ONCC

What Are the Prerequisites?

Because nurse practitioner programs are conferred at the master's degree level, you may be required to submit documentation, including your official undergraduate degree transcripts and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. Admissions to a nurse practitioner program may require an active, state-specific registered nurse (RN) license, references and a resume that shows your level of employment in nursing.

How Long Will it Take Me?

Your oncology nurse practitioner curriculum may involve both classroom lectures and clinical components. Some programs may also require you to complete a thesis. While you may complete some or all of your courses online, you may still be required to attend campus-based laboratory sessions and complete clinical site residencies. Most programs can be completed in two to three years, including clinical residencies.

How Do I Get Certified?

The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) is the credentialing organization for advanced certification for oncology nurse practitioners (www.oncc.org). The ONCC offers the designation of Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP) for those who meet the eligibility requirements and pass a qualifying examination. Eligibility requirements include graduation from an oncology nurse practitioner program, current RN license and 500 supervised clinical hours in oncology.
