An online education in computer forensics provides a convenient way to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the field. Read on to determine which programs and schools are right for your goals and experience.

What Kind of Computer Forensics Education Can I Pursue Online?

Although it's a fairly new field, more colleges are starting to introduce programs leading to a degree in computer forensics or investigative forensics. In some cases, computer forensics courses or specialties can be found in related degree programs, such as Internet security and information systems security.

On-campus programs in computer forensics are becoming common. However, there are several schools that offer online programs leading to a bachelor's degree, postgraduate certificate, master's degree or continuing education professional certificate in computer forensics. The Digital Forensics Association (DFA) provides links to all schools offering computer forensics program. Visits to the websites of the individual schools will let you know about the availability of online or hybrid programs.

What Courses Will I Take?

Although some schools offer online degree-completion programs, open to individuals who hold an associate's degree in an appropriate field, others offer entire bachelor's degree programs online. If you enroll in a bachelor's program, you'll be required to take a certain number of general education courses in order to fulfill normal degree requirements. Courses specific to computer forensics may cover computer security, telecommunications, criminal law, criminal investigation and cyber crime. You'll be given the opportunity to choose elective courses that can discuss operating systems, investigative interviewing techniques, criminalistics and white-collar crime. Some programs can include a supervised internship.

In order to qualify for a post-bachelor's certificate, you must hold a bachelor's degree in computing technology or a related field; or, you must have a significant amount of appropriate work experience. Generally your undergraduate GPA must be at least 2.50. Typically, a certificate program consists of such courses as security technology models, intrusion detection, security defense countermeasures, cryptography, information technology security policies, access control and security architecture.

An online master's degree program has admission requirements similar to those of a post-bachelor's certificate program. The program can take 18-24 months to complete and explores themes in cyber law, security policy, network intrusion, hacking, computer ethics and communications.

Will I Need a License or Certification?

Some states require that computer forensics experts hold a license as a private investigator. Your state licensing board can provide you with their policy. However, most states do require certification. The type of certification you should pursue is often determined by the nature of your anticipated employment. Often, the agency you're applying to will specify a required certification. Generally, certification is earned by passing a proficiency examination.

Some options are narrowly focused and vendor-specific, such as those for Comp TIA Network+ and PWO-200 Wireless LAN. These may be incorporated into a more broad degree or certificate program. The International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists confers the Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE) designation. The Certified Computer Forensics Examiner (CCFE) is awarded by the Information Assurance Certification Review board. The International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners offers the Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) label. The Global Information Assurance Certification Organization grants GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA) certification.

When it comes to online education programs in the field of computer forensics, students have plenty of options. In some cases, a bachelor's degree program might be the right fit for you; if not, graduate certificates and master's degrees are also options.
