How Can I Earn an Online Criminal Justice (MBA) Master's Degree?

Online criminal justice MBA programs aren't very common, but you can find some that offer a criminal justice concentration. Non-MBA online criminal justice master's degree programs may also give you training to be an administrator in the field, but MBA programs usually give you more instruction in the business side of running a criminal justice organization. There are many general online MBA programs, though, and you can find some traditional campus-based criminal justice MBA programs.

Usually, you need to have a bachelor's degree and, in some cases, experience in the criminal justice field to be accepted into an MBA program with a concentration in criminal justice. Online MBA programs typically require about 44 credits to graduate, most of which are core business and management classes. You also get to select a few elective courses.

Prerequisites Bachelor's degree and sometimes relevant professional experience
Program Length Online programs generally take about 44 credit hours to complete
Common Courses Management, administration, finance, law enforcement management, communications
Other Requirements Often students may be required to take courses on campus for a day or so

What Are These Programs Like?

If you find an online criminal justice MBA program that suits your needs, you may take courses in management, administration, finance and communication. You can learn how to use technology in administration, analyze research to solve problems and effectively manage an organization. You take additional courses that address specific issues in criminal justice agencies, such as criminal justice system analysis, law enforcement management, intelligence systems and legal issues.

An online master's degree program in criminal justice usually requires fewer business-related courses than an MBA program, but you take more courses that focus on issues specific to the industry. You can take core courses that cover criminal justice agency management, public policy, criminological theory and research analysis. You can often choose to take more courses in crime analysis, emergency management and policing.

How Does Online Learning Work?

When you enroll in an online criminal justice MBA or master's degree program, your school gives you access to an online classroom software package. This is how you access course materials, readings and assignments. You contact course instructors and participate in class discussions via message boards and e-mail. Special software and technology isn't usually necessary, but you do need to have regular access to a working computer and high-speed Internet.

Online programs allow you to continue working and participating in family life. You can complete your coursework on your own schedule. In most programs, though, you need to spend about the same amount of time learning as you would in a traditional program. Course due dates and exam times usually apply. You might be required to spend some time on campus, but these visits usually last only a day or so.
