What Can I Learn in Online Forensic Accounting Courses?

Forensic accounting courses cover principles of fraud detection. Generally speaking, no matter what degree level you decide to pursue, you will learn about identifying, collecting, and examining information related to cases of fraud and litigation. Some courses also include topics in spreadsheet and database software, where you can discover how to use these computer technologies to perform audits. More examples of some of the courses you may take follow.

Introduction to Forensic Accounting

In the introductory courses, students will begin to understand the basic principles of forensic accounting. You will also be introduced to the basic tools available to forensic accountants.

Fraud Prevention

Students will learn about the different types of fraud. The class will include analysis of financial statements and strategies for detecting fraud, analytical procedures, and the evaluation of risk.

Auditing

In auditing-related courses, students will learn about the technologies available to investigate, document, and prevent many different kinds of fraud. You will learn to apply techniques to control fraud.

Business Law

Some of the forensic accounting degree programs include legal courses. In business law, students will learn about legal issues that businesses might face, such as torts, employment law, contracts, and bankruptcy. You may also learn about government regulations.

At What Levels Are Courses Available?

Online professional certificate programs are available to students who want to enter the forensic accounting field or to auditors and business managers who want a better understanding of forensic accounting practices and theories. Online courses for forensic accounting associate degree programs are also offered, but are less common.

You can also take online courses in a forensic accounting bachelor's degree program. Curriculum requirements include additional finance and taxation course topics. If you're interested in taking on managerial responsibilities in forensic accounting, master's degrees with online courses are available to applicants with a bachelor's degree in finance or a related field of study.

What Are the Technical Requirements?

Assignments and class discussions for online courses are often accessed through course management systems such as Blackboard. You may also view course lectures through live video conferencing. To access these materials you'll need a computer with Internet access, sound capabilities and multi-media plug-ins. Each program may have different requirements for operating systems and software. Check with the program to ensure you have the minimum technology requirements prior to registering for classes.
