What Will I Learn?

Online pathology courses deal primarily with the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. You can find options with certain sub-fields such as forest pathology, plant pathology and turfgrass pathology. Online clinical pathology classes are available for those in the medical field, including those for non-MDs. Depending on your profession or area of interest, you'll probably find one specialization more appropriate than another. Course options may include the following:

Forest Pathology

In this course students will learn about major diseases of forest trees and the cause of deterioration in wood products. Students will learn about plant pathology and ways of preventing and managing these types of diseases.

Plant Pathology

Online pathology courses that cover the plant family teach you about diseases that afflict particular types of plants. In these classes students will learn about the types of organisms involved in plant diseases and explore the methods used to treat, prevent and eradicate disease in plants.

Turfgrass Pathology

In online turfgrass pathology courses you'll learn about diseases that affect different types of turf, from home lawns to golf courses. You will examine methods for managing and controlling diseases that can arise in these types of environments.

Clinical Pathology

An online clinical pathology course covers human anatomy and immunology as they relate to disease. In this class, you'll learn about microbiology and how to diagnose, treat and prevent diseases in the human body.

Health Care Management

As part of a clinical pathology program, this class will address management in health care organizations. You will learn about all the different roles, such as various types of doctors, nurses and support staff, and how they contribute to the health care system.

How Do Online Courses Work?

If you enroll in an online pathology course, you'll receive access to your school's Internet-based classroom platform, such as Moodle. You'll watch videos, read lecture notes and participate in discussions via the Web. You might also communicate with your instructor through e-mail. In some courses, you may be required to take exams on campus; however, students who live a prohibitive distance from the school can often make arrangements to take proctored tests near their home. Some courses offer no academic credits, and in these classes you might take tests independently. Such tests aren't graded, and their main purpose is for self-evaluation of the course material.
