Ontario Business School Using ITunes to Distribute Case Studies

iTunes isn't just for fans of music. Users can also access educational content through its bookstore. The Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario is the latest in a long line of educational institutions to use the popular software program. The business school isn't dipping its toe into the iTunes publishing waters, however. It's making a big splash by distributing over 500 case studies. Schools offering Business degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

New Kid on the Block

Only Harvard University publishes more business case studies than the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. However, the distribution of approximately 500 business case studies by the Richard Ivey School of Business makes it the largest publisher in this area on iTunes. The Richard Ivey School of Business was formed in 1922 and for almost as long, the case method has been central to the school's approach on teaching general management. The case studies allow readers to analyze a particular business issue, make judgments and then determine an appropriate course of action.

Case studies are available in other areas too, such as accounting, entrepreneurship, international business, marketing and organizational behavior. The business school also has a second campus in Hong Kong and many of the case studies are specific to Asian countries and business concerns. The case studies and articles from the Ivey Business Journal are available through the iBookstore portal. Users can access the content by visiting the iTunes website, the iTunes software program or the iBooks app for the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad. Each case study can be downloaded for $3.99 in Canadian currency, or about $4.08 U.S.

Just the Beginning

While its initial submission of roughly 500 case studies puts the Richard Ivey School of Business at the head of the pack, it's only the beginning. The school has plans to add more on a regular basis. Currently, the school publishes 200 case studies annually. The number of these that will be distributed to iTunes is unknown. The goal of the iTunes publishing initiative according to Paul Beamish, Director of Ivey Publishing, is to reach a wider audience that may have not been previously aware of business case studies. Typically, students and executives make up a large portion of the school's case-study audience but with the large number of iTunes users worldwide, Mr. Beamish's goal of appealing to broader readership is certainly realistic.
