What Operations Management Certifications Are Available?

The Association for Operations Management (APICS) offers two designations relating to this field. The Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) designation means that you understand production strategies, field terminology and inventory concepts. The Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) designation represents knowledge in logistics, consumer and supplier relationships, supply chain functions, global operations and supply chain organization.

Certification TitlesCertified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM), Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP)
CPIM Exam TopicsSupply issues, business concepts, product demand, data collection
CSCP Exam TopicsSupply and demand, reverse logistics, communications, system infrastructure
Continuing Education75 credits within five years; if not met, then 15 credits needed per additional year to maintain certification

How Do I Earn the CPIM Designation?

The only requirement for this designation is to complete proctored exams following online courses offered by the APICS, but two years of experience is ideal. These courses cover supply chain management basics, scheduling, planning, operations control and management strategies. The exams cover topics in business concepts, product demand, supply issues, distribution, replenishment, inventory and scheduling. You can also expect questions on operation solutions, data collection, corrective action and improvement potential.

After earning the CPIM designation, you can earn the Certified Fellow in Production and Inventory Management (CFPIM) designation. This requires you to complete activity points by publishing work, making presentations and undergoing instruction.

How Do I Earn the CSCP Designation?

To qualify for the CSCP designation, you need at least five years of experience or two years of supply chain experience with a bachelor's degree. You can also qualify for the exam with two years of supply chain experience and the CPIM or CFPIM designation.

Although it isn't required, APICS offers modules to prepare you for the CSCP exam. These modules cover customer management, supplier relationships, planning, operations, logistics and information technology. These modules can prepare you for questions regarding production strategies, supply and demand, reverse logistics, consumer needs, purchasing, communications and system infrastructures.

How Can I Maintain Certification?

To maintain certification, both designations require you to complete 75 continuing education credits by the fifth year of certification. Your certification will be suspended if you fail to complete maintenance requirements. Each year of suspension requires you to complete an additional 15 continuing education credits.

After five years of suspension, you need to complete the certification process again. In some cases, APICS offers a special CPIM exam that replaces the need to retake all required exams. This special exam will only be offered to you once and can cover materials from all CPIM exams.
