What You Need to Know

Kentucky students interested in becoming a paramedic may earn a certificate or an associate's degree. There are three levels of emergency medical technician (EMT) training, the highest of which is paramedicine. Kentucky schools offering paramedic training programs include two- and four-year public institutions. A certificate may be earned in as little as three semesters, while an associate's degree requires two years of training. All Kentucky paramedic programs require that applicants already be certified as an EMT.

Gateway Community and Technical College

Gateway Community and Technical College (GCTC) is committed to making education convenient. With 3 campus locations, GCTC offers a variety of training programs with daytime, evening and weekend classes. The paramedic program includes courses and clinical rotations in both pre-hospital and intra-hospital settings. Although courses are available in the evening, the clinical portions can be taken during the day, evening or weekends. Your field internship requires at least 225 hours with ambulance services. The school also offers an Associate of Applied Science in Paramedic Technology program.

Madisonville Community College

The paramedic technology program offers you the choice of pursuing a certificate of completion or an associate's degree. Both programs require completion of courses, clinical rotations and field internships working with ambulance services; however, the associate's degree program also includes general education courses. Upon completion, you can take the NREMT paramedic certification exam so you can work as a licensed paramedic in Kentucky.

Owensboro Community and Technical College

Located in Kentucky's 3rd-largest city, Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC) is known for its many training programs and its advanced technology center. The curriculum includes lectures, lab studies and clinical rotations. You'll develop the skills needed to provide advanced emergency medical care on the scene, in the ambulance and in medical facilities. The clinicals also prepare you for certification for American Health Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) and Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS). You obtain hands-on experience through a field internship that has you working with assigned ambulances for at least 525 contact hours. Upon completion, you can take the NREMT-P certification exam and seek work as a licensed paramedic in Kentucky. The paramedic technology program is also available as a 2-year associate's degree program.

Paramedic Associate's Degree Programs in Kentucky

Western Kentucky University

The paramedic technology program at WKU is available on a credit track, which leads to an associate's degree, or a noncredit track you can take at your own pace. In addition to general education courses, you attend classroom lectures, didactic practical studies, clinical rotations and a field internship. You obtain certification in ACLS, PALS and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) and become eligible to take the NREMT-Paramedic certification examination. The college also offers a paramedic degree-completion program for candidates who are already certified paramedics but want to earn a degree.
