Online Pet Grooming Courses

Read about your options for studying pet grooming through online courses. Since hands-on training is essential for pet groomers, you typically can't find these courses solely online, though some other distance-learning options may be available. Schools offering Pet Grooming degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Will I Learn in an Online Pet Grooming Course?

In pet grooming courses, you'll gain familiarity with various breeds of dog and cat, including their typical behaviors and personality traits, so you'll be able to handle them. You'll also learn how to use multiple tools, such as brushes, razors and nail clippers. Some examples of courses include the following:

Pre-Grooming Procedures

This course focuses on getting familiar with tools and equipment and learning how to use them. Skills learned would include how to properly bathe and dry pets, how to clip their nails, how to clean orifices like eyes and ears, brushing techniques, and planning haircuts based on breed.

Anatomy and Breed

These classes would involve gaining a working knowledge of dog (and cat) anatomy, as well as learning grooming needs based upon breed groups such as toy, sporting, or terrier. Techniques to learn include, but are not limited to, hand scissoring, coat thinning, how to pattern a coat, and how to trim with various blade sizes and extenders.

Puppy and Senior Dog Care

This subject would involve learning to care for dogs when their age, either old or young, factors into the grooming process. This course teaches groomers how to properly handle young and old dogs, how to recognize stress and how to alleviate it, and how to make the experience as positive as possible for the animal.

Cat Grooming

This course involves learning the techniques associated with grooming, bathing and maintaining felines. Students would learn proper procedures for brushing and shaving, de-matting when necessary, and the unique grooming process for kittens.

Business Management

This class would discuss all of the business aspects of running a pet grooming business. Coursework would include customer relations, advertising and marketing, bookkeeping and taxes, and hiring staff, among other concepts.

How Do the Courses Work?

Pet grooming courses are typically hands-on and, therefore, available only on-campus. This provides you with the opportunity to groom animals under the observation of professionals. Some schools do offer pet grooming classes through correspondence programs. Through these courses, you can watch instructional DVDs and follow step-by-step grooming instructions; testing usually takes place online.

When you register for a correspondence program, you receive all of the textbooks and learning materials in the mail, including DVDs and CDs. It is your responsibility to download additional study materials and assignments. Tests are completed online following each lesson. After turning in the assignments and taking the test, you may begin the next lesson. Correspondence programs are typically self-paced, and there are no due dates of any kind.

What Level Are Pet Grooming Courses Available At?

Dedicated pet grooming certificate programs are available. Because it can be an effective calming technique for animals, some schools offer grooming classes as part of associate degree programs in veterinary studies or applied animal science. Some veterinarians - particularly the ones who offer boarding services - also offer grooming as an additional service.

You may be able to take standalone pet grooming courses for personal enrichment. These don't count toward credit but will teach you basic grooming skills you can use on your pets at home.
