What Types of Courses are Available?
Poetry classes are offered at many public and private universities. You may enroll in an online course to learn about a specific type of poetry, such as the romantic period, or you may enroll in a degree program at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Courses may include:
- New media
- Linguistics theory and poetry structure
- Old English
- 19th-century poetry and prose
What Undergraduate Programs are Available?
If you are interested in pursuing a degree in poetry, you can choose between studying English or creative writing. The English track traditionally includes a large number of literature-based courses and a smaller number of writing courses. Creative writing programs focus on writing techniques while analyzing fewer works of literature. Students might also consider an online Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and English with a concentration in poetry.
What Graduate Programs are Available?
There are plentiful options at the graduate-level to study poetry. An MFA in creative writing may offer a concentration in poetry, and writing workshops are often provided through these programs. Some graduate programs might require the successful completion of a poetry thesis. MFA programs are available on-site or through brief-residency programs, where students attend one or two residencies per year and work from home the rest of the time. Brief-residency programs are available at many schools around the country, and some offer annual international residencies, as well.
