Stenoscriptionist Associate's Degree

Stenoscription is another word for medical transcription. This article shows you what you'd learn in an associate's degree program in medical transcription, and the classes you might take. It also mentions online availability for the appropriate medical and health courses, along with certification options.

What Is a Stenoscriptionist Associate's Degree Program?

A stenoscriptionist is more commonly referred to as a medical transcriptionist. Medical transcriptionists transcribe information a doctor or nurse has dictated into a voice recorder into a written document that is often included in the patient's medical file. These degree programs will teach you basic office skills, shorthand techniques, document production, editing and proofreading, in addition to providing you with a basic understanding of the medical field. Upon completion of this degree program, you will likely earn an Associate in Applied Science degree.

Skills LearnedDocument production, shorthand techniques, editing, office duties
Course SubjectsMedical terminology, anatomy and physiology, health and disease, document processing
Certification OptionsAHDI, RMT, CMT
Median Salary$34,770 for transcriptionists

What Will My Classes Be Like?

A medical transcriptionist degree program will teach you the necessary skills to work in a medical office and educate you about the concepts and language specific to the healthcare industry. You will also expand your keyboarding and computer skills. Some examples of classes you may take include:

  • Document processing
  • Medical terminology
  • Medical transcription
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Health and disease

Online programs are available in this field and will provide you with a flexible learning schedule. Some of these programs may be completed more quickly than on-campus programs.

Will I Need To Become Certified?

While certification is generally not a requirement of employment, it may help you find a job. The two most common certifications are offered by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). The Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) exam is intended for those who have just completed a medical transcriptionist degree program. Once you are an RMT and have acquired at least two years of work experience, you will be eligible to take the Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) exam. Many schools design their curriculum based on the requirements of the RMT exam.

What Does This Degree Program Prepare Me For?

Upon completion of your education, you should be prepared to work as a medical transcriptionist in a hospital, doctor's office or other medical facility. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects employment opportunities to decline 3% during the 2016-2026 decade. However, job prospects may be better for those who have completed formal training in the field. The BLS also states that the median annual wage for medical transcriptionists was $34,770 in 2018.
